U.S. Naval Academy on Lockdown After Armed Former Midshipman Reported on Campus

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The U.S. Naval Academy was placed under lockdown Wednesday after reports that a former midshipman, disguised as a military member and armed, returned to campus and began knocking on doors inside Bancroft Hall, the academy’s largest dormitory and the heart of midshipman life.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots shortly before noon, sparking chaos and triggering an immediate response from Naval Support Activity Annapolis, U.S. Navy security forces, and local law enforcement agencies.

Emergency Response

Aerial footage from the scene showed a massive security and medical response unfolding across the historic campus. Ambulances and medical helicopters swarmed to designated landing zones, while heavily armed personnel secured key buildings and cordoned off surrounding streets.

Officials confirmed that multiple victims are being treated on site, with at least one person airlifted to a regional trauma center. The condition of those injured has not yet been released. Emergency medical teams remain stationed at the academy to continue triage and treatment as the situation develops.

Inside Bancroft Hall

Bancroft Hall, often described as the largest dormitory in the world, houses the academy’s entire Brigade of Midshipmen. Witnesses reported frantic scenes as students barricaded themselves in rooms, while security teams moved floor by floor to evacuate and secure sections of the building.

“It was terrifying — we heard banging on doors and then what sounded like shots,” said one midshipman, who asked not to be identified. “We’ve been told to stay inside and lock down until further notice.”
