Two Dead, One Critically Injured in Tragic Route 54 Crash Near Selbyville, Delaware

SELBYVILLE, DE — A devastating two-vehicle crash on Lighthouse Road (Route 54) near Selbyville claimed the lives of two individuals and left another in critical condition Tuesday morning, July 8, 2025. The Delaware State Police are currently investigating the incident, which prompted the temporary closure of a major section of the roadway and drew emergency response teams to the scene for several hours.

According to preliminary findings, the crash occurred just before 8:00 a.m. when a Chevrolet Camaro, driven by 22-year-old Veronika McCoy of Berlin, Maryland, was traveling eastbound on Route 54 toward New Road. At the same time, a Hyundai Santa Fe carrying two elderly men was heading westbound toward the same intersection.

For reasons that remain under investigation, the Camaro reportedly crossed the center line and collided head-on with the Hyundai Santa Fe. The impact was severe, causing extensive damage to both vehicles and immediately drawing emergency personnel to the site.

Veronika McCoy, the young woman driving the Camaro, sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash. She was quickly transported to a nearby hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

Inside the Hyundai, the 77-year-old passenger, later identified as Douglas Bachtell of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at the scene. His friend, the 74-year-old driver from Selbyville, was rushed to the hospital and remains in critical condition, according to authorities.

On Wednesday, July 9, the Delaware State Police officially identified the two victims as Veronika McCoy, 22, and Douglas Bachtell, 77. Both families have been notified and are receiving support as they grieve the sudden and heartbreaking loss of their loved ones.

The collision forced the closure of Lighthouse Road for several hours as crash reconstruction teams and investigators examined the scene. Debris from both vehicles littered the roadway, and authorities worked diligently to document the crash and remove the wreckage.

Police have not yet determined what caused McCoy’s vehicle to drift into oncoming traffic. Investigators are exploring several possible factors, including distracted driving, mechanical failure, or a potential medical episode.

Delaware State Police are asking any witnesses or individuals who may have seen the crash or have relevant information to come forward. They are urged to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 302-703-6264.

This tragic accident serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety. As the community mourns the loss of two lives cut short, thoughts and prayers are extended to the victims’ families and to the injured survivor still fighting for recovery.
