Trooper Injured, Suspect Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting on Detroit’s Northwest Side

DETROIT, MI — A Michigan State Police trooper was injured and a suspect was killed during a shootout early Monday morning on Detroit’s northwest side, prompting a multi-agency investigation into the latest incident of gun violence involving law enforcement.

According to the Michigan State Police (MSP), the shooting occurred at approximately 4:40 a.m. on May 5 in the 20200 block of Murray Hill Street, a residential neighborhood near West Eight Mile Road. The troopers involved were part of the MSP Auto Theft Team, which was conducting operations in the area when the situation quickly escalated.

Preliminary details reveal that the troopers were attempting to engage with a suspect, though the nature of the initial contact—whether it was a routine investigation, pursuit, or tactical operation—has not yet been confirmed. During the encounter, multiple shots were exchanged, resulting in the suspect being fatally shot.

At least one trooper was struck by gunfire during the exchange. He was quickly rendered aid by fellow officers at the scene and transported to a nearby hospital, where he is currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. MSP has since confirmed the trooper is in stable condition, and his identity has not yet been released.

The suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has also not been identified pending family notification. It is unclear at this time whether the suspect fired first or how many individuals were involved in the shooting.

The residential block was quickly flooded with a heavy police presence as crime scene investigators, homicide detectives, and internal affairs units responded to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and begin the standard officer-involved shooting protocol. MSP has stated that both body-worn and vehicle dash camera footage will be reviewed as part of the investigation.

Authorities remained on the scene for several hours Monday morning, with yellow police tape cordoning off the block. Neighbors, many of whom were startled awake by the gunfire, expressed concern and unease over the violence unfolding so close to home.

“This is usually a quiet area,” said one longtime resident. “We never expect to wake up to something like this, especially involving the police.”

As part of standard procedure, the Michigan State Police Force Investigation Unit and the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office have opened a formal investigation into the use of force. The troopers involved will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

MSP is urging the public to remain patient as they work to collect all facts and determine whether the officers acted within the bounds of policy and law.

“We take any use-of-force incident seriously,” said an MSP spokesperson in a brief statement. “Our thoughts are with our injured trooper and the families affected. A full and transparent investigation is underway.”

Anyone with information about the incident or who may have witnessed the events is encouraged to contact the Michigan State Police or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

This remains a developing story, and more information is expected to be released in the coming days as the investigation progresses.
