According to the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD), the initial call placed around 8:30 p.m. was believed to be for a possible overdose. When officers arrived at the scene, the situation quickly turned grim.

“Officers arrived, thought they were going to give first aid to an individual with an overdose,” GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom said during a late-night briefing. “They realized that this person had actually been struck by gunfire, administered first aid.”

Marlo Stanfield was transported by emergency responders to a local hospital, but despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. He was later officially identified by authorities after notifying next of kin.

What began as a potential medical emergency quickly turned into a homicide investigation. Witnesses and early leads pointed officers in the direction of a motel near the shooting scene, where the suspected shooter was believed to have fled.

The motel was quickly surrounded, and officers evacuated its occupants as they conducted a room-by-room search.
