Tragic Mass Shooting in South Minneapolis Leaves Three Dead, Two Critically Injured
Minneapolis, MN — A mass shooting late Sunday night in South Minneapolis has left three people dead and two others fighting for their lives, shaking the city to its core and prompting urgent calls for peace and accountability. The deadly incident occurred near the intersection of Bloomington Avenue South and East 25th Street in Ward 9—an area represented by Council Member Jason Chavez—and has now become the focus of a fast-moving police investigation.
Minneapolis Police and emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:10 a.m. in response to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the area. Upon arrival, officers discovered five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, three of the victims—two men and one woman—were pronounced dead at the scene. The two surviving victims were transported to a nearby trauma center in critical condition.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara addressed the public during a press conference Monday morning, calling the incident a “horrific and deeply troubling tragedy.” He confirmed that early findings from the investigation suggest the victims were not chosen at random.
“Preliminary evidence indicates a high probability that this was a targeted act of violence,” Chief O’Hara stated. “We are working with urgency to determine the motives behind the shooting and identify those responsible.”
Although the identities of all the victims have not been released pending family notifications, the community has already begun mourning the loss, particularly of one individual known locally as Evan Denny, also known by the name Ramone Day or “Eday.” Evan was a familiar presence in the city’s music and arts community, and his death has sparked an outpouring of grief and tributes on social media.
The shooting occurred in a densely populated urban neighborhood, sparking fear among residents and renewed calls for stronger community safety measures. Witnesses described hearing a rapid series of gunshots, followed by chaos and confusion as people scrambled for cover. Local businesses and residents along Bloomington Avenue have been left rattled, with several cooperating with investigators and offering surveillance footage from the surrounding area.
City Council Member Jason Chavez released a statement expressing heartbreak and solidarity with the affected families, while also calling on city leaders to invest more in violence prevention and intervention efforts.
“The pain our community feels right now is immeasurable,” Chavez said. “We need real solutions that go beyond policing to address the root causes of violence.”
The Minneapolis Police Department has confirmed that a large quantity of evidence was recovered at the scene, including ballistic material, but no arrests have been made as of Tuesday morning. Detectives are actively interviewing witnesses and reviewing camera footage, and they are urging anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers or submit tips anonymously.
In the meantime, grief counselors and community outreach workers have been deployed to the neighborhood to assist residents and family members grappling with the trauma of this tragedy. Plans for vigils and memorials are underway, including a community gathering to honor the lives lost and support the families left behind.
This latest act of violence adds to a troubling trend of gun-related incidents in Minneapolis and underscores the need for both immediate and long-term strategies to protect neighborhoods and restore a sense of security.
As the investigation continues, Minneapolis stands united in mourning, hoping for justice and healing in the wake of an unthinkable loss.
