Tragic Incident at Werner Peak Trail Deemed Murder-Suicide

On the morning of May 11, 2025, at approximately 5:52 AM, Kalispell Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence located at 127 Werner Peak Trail in the Silverbrook Estates subdivision after receiving a 911 call reporting a mental health emergency. The call, placed by 33-year-old Nicholas Olson-Hartley, raised immediate concern due to the disturbing nature of the statements made before the line was abruptly disconnected.

Upon arrival, officers were initially unable to make contact with anyone at the residence. Attempts to reach individuals inside were unsuccessful, and the home appeared unresponsive from the outside. As officers continued to assess the scene, they observed evidence that indicated a potential threat to life within the residence. Following protocol under exigent circumstances, officers made a forced entry into the home.

Inside, responding officers discovered a heartbreaking and horrifying scene. Four individuals were found deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. The deceased were identified as:

  • Nicholas Olson-Hartley, 33, the original caller
  • Katie Olson-Hartley, 27, Nicholas’s wife
  • A 6-year-old child
  • A 7-month-old infant

After securing the scene and initiating a thorough investigative process, which included interviewing witnesses, family members, and neighbors, as well as collecting physical evidence throughout the residence, investigators concluded that the event was the result of a murder-suicide.

Preliminary findings indicate that Nicholas Olson-Hartley shot and killed his wife and two children before placing a call to 911. Shortly after making that call, he turned the weapon on himself. Investigators believe the incident was isolated within the household, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
