Tragic Drowning Incident in New Buffalo, Michigan Claims Life of 20-Year-Old Niles Resident
New Buffalo, MI — June 30, 2025 — A somber atmosphere has settled over the lakeside community of New Buffalo following a tragic incident that occurred on the evening of Saturday, June 28, 2025. At approximately 8:30 p.m., the New Buffalo City Police Department responded to an emergency call reporting a possible drowning near the N. Whittaker Street bridge, a well-known location that spans over the Galien River and draws both residents and visitors alike, particularly during the summer months.
Upon receiving the distress call, officers arrived swiftly at the scene and were soon joined by first responders, including New Buffalo Township Fire Department personnel, Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, and members of the U.S. Coast Guard. A coordinated search and rescue effort was launched immediately, with responders using boats, sonar equipment, and drones in a race against time and diminishing daylight.
The victim was later identified as Tucker Vaughn, a 20-year-old resident of Niles, Michigan. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing Vaughn enter the water near the bridge, but it became quickly apparent that he was struggling to stay afloat. Despite several individuals’ attempts to reach him and a rapid response from emergency services, he disappeared beneath the surface before help could arrive.
Search efforts continued late into the evening and resumed at first light on Sunday morning. Divers and search teams concentrated their efforts on the area beneath and around the bridge, where currents from the Galien River can be deceptively strong, especially following recent rains. Tragically, Vaughn’s body was recovered Sunday afternoon, bringing a heartbreaking end to the search.
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Preliminary reports do not suggest foul play, and alcohol or substance involvement has not yet been confirmed. An autopsy will be performed by the Berrien County Medical Examiner to determine the official cause of death.

In the wake of this tragedy, city officials are urging residents and visitors to exercise increased caution around open water, especially during the peak of the season.
Plans for a candlelight vigil in honor of Tucker Vaughn are currently underway, to be held in both New Buffalo and Niles.
