BRECKENRIDGE, TX — The community of Breckenridge is reeling after a tragic discovery early Sunday morning. According to Breckenridge Police Chief Blake Johnson, officers were called to the Conquistador Apartments in the 1100 block of West Elliott Street around 9 a.m. on Sunday, October 19, following reports of a man found with a gunshot wound to the head.

Upon arrival, police located the victim, identified as Zack Smith, inside an apartment. Emergency medical personnel immediately began life-saving efforts, but despite their best attempts, Zack was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered nearby; however, Chief Johnson emphasized that it remains unclear whether the weapon was involved in the shooting.

“We found a male in the apartment with a bullet wound to the head. EMS attempted to try to bring him back, but the efforts failed. The person died here at the scene,” said Chief Johnson.

The initial 911 call came from a close friend of Zack Smith, who discovered him and immediately contacted authorities. As investigators processed the scene, unanswered questions began to emerge, prompting the Breckenridge Police Department to request assistance from the Texas Rangers.

“The Rangers came and assisted us with the investigation,” Chief Johnson explained. “We’ve gone through an extensive amount of questioning and things. At this point, we’re unable to say with any certainty what we feel like the outcome is.”

The ongoing investigation remains in its early stages, and police have not named any suspects or persons of interest. Authorities continue to gather evidence and conduct interviews in an effort to piece together what led to the tragic death of Zack Smith.

The shocking news has deeply affected the Breckenridge community, where Zack was known and loved by many. Friends and neighbors have expressed disbelief and sorrow, remembering him as a kind-hearted and easygoing individual who always brought a sense of warmth and positivity to those around him.

As investigators work to uncover the truth, the community mourns a life cut short under heartbreaking circumstances. The Breckenridge Police Department and Texas Rangers are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
