Tragic Crash in Newburgh Claims Life of Passenger

A police pursuit in the early hours of April 25, 2025, ended in tragedy when a vehicle fleeing from state troopers crashed off the roadway, resulting in the death of Phelipe Figueroa, 25, of Otisville, New York. The New York State Police are conducting a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.


Incident Overview

At approximately 3:43 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025, New York State Police attempted to stop a 2015 GMC Sierra pickup truck for vehicle and traffic violations on Route 9W in the town of Newburgh. The driver failed to comply, leading troopers on a pursuit that continued south on Route 9W, onto State Route 32, and eventually to I-84 westbound. Due to dangerously high speeds, troopers discontinued the chase out of concern for public safety. A short time later, the pickup was found off the shoulder of the roadway, overturned after colliding with a tractor without a trailer. A preliminary investigation revealed that after striking the tractor, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash.


Victims Identified

The passenger in the vehicle, Phelipe Figueroa, was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver, identified as Liam F. McNichol, 25, of Port Jervis, New York, was also transported to St. Luke’s Hospital with minor injuries. Charges are pending, and the New York State Attorney General’s Office has been notified and responded to the scene.
