Tragedy Unfolds in Addison: NY State Police Identify Victim and Shooter in Fatal Domestic Incident
ADDISON, N.Y. — The quiet community of Addison is reeling after a tragic domestic dispute ended in a deadly shooting and subsequent suicide on the morning of Friday, June 20. According to the New York State Police (NYSP), two men are confirmed dead following the harrowing chain of events that began around 7 a.m. at a residence on Academy Street.
Authorities have identified the victim as Tomas Venegas, 41, who tragically lost his life at the scene. The shooter, Ryan L. Chase, 45, also of Addison, was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a wooded area near Wall Street after fleeing the initial crime scene.
A Morning Turned Violent
The NYSP reports that the incident began as a domestic dispute involving Chase, a 43-year-old woman, and her boyfriend, Tomas Venegas. At some point during the confrontation, Chase reportedly left the home, only to return later, armed and intent on violence. Upon his return, he fatally shot Venegas before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
State Troopers responded swiftly to the emergency call and upon arrival found Venegas already deceased. A short time later, Chase’s vehicle was discovered crashed near Wall Street in Addison. Troopers began a search of the nearby area, which led them to a wooded section where Chase’s body was located. Authorities confirmed that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, bringing a grim close to the tragic series of events.
Community in Mourning
The devastating news has shaken the Addison community, where neighbors and residents are struggling to comprehend the tragedy that unfolded so suddenly and violently. Venegas is remembered by friends and loved ones as a kind, hardworking man who was deeply committed to those around him. His untimely death has left a void in the hearts of many.
Authorities have not released the name of the 43-year-old woman involved, and no injuries to her were reported. However, the emotional toll on her and the families affected by the loss of both men is immeasurable.
Ongoing Investigation
The New York State Police continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the incident, although they have indicated that the shooting appears to be an isolated domestic violence-related incident. There is no ongoing threat to the public.
In a brief statement, NYSP emphasized the tragic nature of the situation and extended their sympathies to the families of those involved. Crisis counselors and victim assistance services are expected to be offered to those impacted by the incident in the coming days.
As investigators work to piece together a clearer timeline and motive, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of a senseless act of violence — one that has forever changed the lives of those closest to the victims.
