Tragedy in Vermilion Parish: Pedestrian Killed in Late-Night Crash on LA Hwy 14
ERATH, La. – A quiet evening in Vermilion Parish turned tragic late Friday night when a local woman was fatally struck by a vehicle while walking along a dimly lit stretch of Louisiana Highway 14. Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to the fatal crash just after 11:00 p.m. on June 27, 2025, near Callahan Street, in a heartbreaking incident that claimed the life of 35-year-old Carol Polk of Erath.
According to the preliminary investigation, Polk was walking westbound in the left lane of LA Hwy 14, dressed in dark clothing. At the same time, a 2021 Nissan SUV, also traveling westbound, was unable to avoid the pedestrian and struck her in the roadway. Emergency personnel arrived quickly, but sadly, Polk suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Nissan SUV was properly restrained and was not injured in the collision. Authorities stated the driver showed no signs of impairment, cooperated fully with investigators, and voluntarily provided a breath sample. Test results revealed no alcohol in the driver’s system.
As standard procedure, a toxicology sample was collected from the victim and is currently pending laboratory analysis. At this time, no charges have been filed, and the crash remains under active investigation.
Louisiana State Police are using this tragedy as a solemn reminder of the importance of pedestrian safety, especially in low-visibility conditions. Crashes involving pedestrians often occur at night and in areas without adequate lighting. Safety experts emphasize that visibility is a key factor in avoiding these devastating incidents.
“While every fatality is tragic, many pedestrian-involved crashes are preventable,” said a spokesperson for Troop I. “It’s essential that both motorists and pedestrians remain alert, especially during nighttime hours. Drivers must stay vigilant, and pedestrians need to take steps to be seen.”
Safety Tips for Pedestrians:
- Wear light-colored or reflective clothing when walking at night.
- Avoid walking in travel lanes, especially in unlit or dark areas.
- Cross roadways only at designated crosswalks or intersections whenever possible.
- Always walk facing traffic if a sidewalk is not available.
- Do not assume drivers can see you, particularly after dark.
Community members in Erath have begun expressing their sorrow over Polk’s untimely passing. Friends and neighbors have described her as a quiet but kind presence in the area. “Carol was one of those people who always said hello and checked in with her neighbors. It’s just heartbreaking,” said one local resident.
This incident marks another somber reminder of how quickly lives can be lost on Louisiana roadways. As Troopers continue to investigate the crash, they are urging everyone—motorists and pedestrians alike—to remain cautious, aware, and committed to safety.
