Tragedy in Thibodaux: Negligent Homicide Leads to Suicide, Two Young Lives Lost

A heartbreaking and deeply tragic incident unfolded in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 5, 2025, in Lafourche Parish, resulting in the deaths of Draven Hendon, 30, of Thibodaux, and Jordan Landry, 22, of Houma. According to Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre, what appears to have been a moment of carelessness and poor judgment ended in an irreversible tragedy—one life lost to accidental gunfire, and another to an act of suicide shortly thereafter.

Deputies and detectives with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office were dispatched just after 3:30 a.m. to a residence in the 200 block of Colony Station in Thibodaux, following a call reporting gunshots. Upon arrival, they found both Hendon and Landry pronounced dead at the scene.

Based on preliminary evidence collected, investigators believe the two men were playing with a loaded firearm inside the home when it accidentally discharged, fatally striking Jordan Landry. In the moments following the fatal misfire, Draven Hendon is believed to have turned the gun on himself, dying by suicide.

“This is a tragedy beyond words,” said Sheriff Craig Webre in an official statement. “Two families are now left devastated, and a community is once again reminded of the dangerous consequences of handling firearms carelessly. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the families of those involved in this tragic incident.”

As the investigation continues, the sheriff’s office has emphasized that any new evidence or findings that contradict initial reports will be shared publicly. At this time, the deaths are being investigated as a negligent homicide followed by suicide, both of which serve as a grim reminder of the need for greater gun safety awareness and mental health support.

A Preventable Tragedy

Both Draven Hendon and Jordan Landry were young men with their whole lives ahead of them. Jordan, just 22 years old, was known for his outgoing nature and his love for family and friends. He had ambitions, plans, and a personality that brought laughter into any room he entered. Draven, at 30, was described by loved ones as loyal, kind-hearted, and always willing to help a friend in need. Those who knew him say he carried a weight on his shoulders that he rarely spoke about, but often tried to ease through connection and camaraderie.

This tragic event leaves behind more than sorrow—it leaves behind families forever changed, friends mourning, and a community once again facing the painful reality of lives lost due to gun-related incidents. It underscores the critical importance of responsible firearm ownership, including safe storage, education, and never treating a weapon—loaded or otherwise—as a toy or plaything.

Supporting the Families and Community

In the wake of this devastating loss, grief counselors and local clergy have offered their support to the families and friends affected by the tragedy. The community of Thibodaux and neighboring Houma are known for their close-knit ties and shared resilience. In times of sorrow, that unity becomes a source of comfort and strength.

As investigations continue, Sheriff Webre and the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office urge residents to take this incident as a serious reminder of the life-and-death responsibility that comes with owning or handling firearms. This is not just about legality—it’s about lives.

For anyone struggling in the aftermath of this tragedy, resources are available through local crisis centers and national suicide prevention services. If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t wait—help is out there, and you are not alone.

Rest in peace, Draven Hendon and Jordan Landry. May your lives be remembered not just by how they ended, but by the people you were, the love you gave, and the memories you leave behind. You will be missed beyond measure.
