Tragedy in Pickering: 13-Year-Old Arrested After Fatal Stabbing of Elderly Woman
PICKERING, ONTARIO – A devastating tragedy has shaken the community of Pickering after an elderly woman was fatally stabbed on Thursday, May 29, 2025, marking Durham Region’s second homicide of the year. In a deeply disturbing turn of events, the alleged perpetrator is a 13-year-old male who has since been taken into police custody.
At approximately 3:05 p.m., officers from Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) West Division responded to an “unknown trouble” call in the area of Lynn Heights Drive and Fairport Road. A passerby had discovered the elderly victim lying on the ground outside a residence, suffering from severe and traumatic injuries. Emergency services rushed the woman to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where she was later pronounced dead.
Police quickly launched an intensive investigation into the incident. Surveillance footage from the area revealed chilling details: the elderly woman had been outside when the young suspect approached her. Following a brief encounter, the boy suddenly launched a violent attack, stabbing her multiple times before fleeing the scene eastbound on Lynn Heights Drive.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, authorities issued a public shelter-in-place advisory. The Ontario Provincial Police also released an Alert Ready notification in an effort to warn residents and minimize any potential risk to public safety.
An extensive and coordinated search operation was conducted involving multiple specialized units, including Air1, drones, K9 units, and the Tactical Support Team. These efforts culminated in the successful apprehension of the suspect at around 8:30 p.m. He was taken into custody without incident. Authorities confirmed the boy is a 13-year-old resident of Pickering. As of this writing, formal charges are pending.
A heavy police presence will remain in the Lynn Heights Drive area in the coming days as the investigation continues. Officers are canvassing the neighborhood for further information and evidence to fully piece together the events that led to the shocking attack.
