Tragedy in Commack: One Dead, One Injured After Dumpster Emptied Into Garbage Truck

COMMACK, N.Y. — In a heartbreaking and tragic incident, one man is dead and another is recovering from injuries after a garbage truck unknowingly collected a dumpster in which the two were sleeping early Thursday morning. The disturbing event unfolded in Commack, a Long Island hamlet in Suffolk County, and has left the local community shocked and mourning.

According to Suffolk County police, the two men had been sheltering overnight inside a commercial dumpster located at a shopping plaza in Commack. Sometime early Thursday morning, a garbage truck servicing the area collected and emptied the dumpster’s contents into its compactor — not knowing there were people inside.

The truck continued its route for nearly six miles before stopping at William T. Rogers Middle School in Kings Park around 6:30 a.m. It was there that a person, likely a school employee or passerby, noticed someone moving inside the back of the garbage truck and immediately called for help.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and found one of the men alive but seriously injured. He was immediately transported to Huntington Hospital and is being treated for a leg injury, police said.

Tragically, the second man was found deceased inside the truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene. While the identity of the deceased has not yet been released, officials noted that both men were believed to have been using the dumpster as shelter and were likely experiencing homelessness or in a state of extreme vulnerability.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death, but initial investigations suggest the man was alive when the dumpster was emptied, indicating he likely died from injuries sustained during or after the garbage truck’s compacting process.

Police have not released the names or ages of either man, citing the need to notify next of kin and ongoing investigation. Authorities are also working to determine how and why the men came to be inside the dumpster.

A Shocking Discovery at a Local School

The scene at William T. Rogers Middle School initially caused confusion and concern among parents and school staff. Kings Park school officials acted swiftly to reassure families by sending out a message clarifying that the emergency response was entirely unrelated to the school or its operations. They confirmed that at no point were students or faculty in danger and that the school day proceeded as scheduled.

Broader Issues Raised

The tragic event has raised renewed concerns about homelessness and the safety risks faced by individuals without stable shelter. Advocates for the unhoused population in Suffolk County say the case highlights a dire need for more accessible housing and emergency services — especially as individuals take desperate measures to stay warm and safe.

“It’s heartbreaking that someone seeking a place to sleep could lose their life in such a horrific way,” said one local advocate. “This is a tragic reminder of the real dangers facing people experiencing homelessness every day.”

Investigation Continues

As of Thursday evening, police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances leading up to the incident. They are reviewing surveillance footage from the shopping plaza, speaking to local businesses, and checking any prior reports involving the individuals believed to be involved.

Officials have not confirmed whether charges will be filed or whether any policy violations occurred during the waste collection process. Standard procedure in such incidents involves a thorough review by both law enforcement and the waste management company involved.

Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact the Suffolk County Police Department.

This incident is a tragic reminder of the unseen and often overlooked struggles faced by vulnerable individuals in our communities. As authorities investigate and families grieve, the community of Commack is left reckoning with the profound human cost behind this devastating accident.
