Tragedy in Charlotte: Jeremy Mouzon, 44, Killed in Brutal Attack Near NoDa Neighborhood
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A devastating and violent incident in northeast Charlotte has left a community in mourning after 44-year-old Jeremy Mouzon was brutally killed early Sunday morning. Authorities with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) confirmed that Mouzon died after suffering multiple stab wounds and being struck by a vehicle near the city’s vibrant and artistic NoDa neighborhood.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the area of 36th Street and North Tryon Street shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 3, following several 911 calls reporting a man lying injured on the side of the road. When officers arrived on the scene, they found Mouzon unresponsive, with significant trauma consistent with both sharp-force injuries and blunt-force impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The gruesome discovery quickly drew attention from nearby residents, some of whom had heard shouting and the sounds of an altercation just moments before police arrived.
“This is something out of a nightmare,” said a neighbor who lives near the intersection and asked to remain anonymous. “We heard yelling, tires screeching, then silence. It’s hard to believe something like this could happen here.”
According to preliminary information from investigators, Mouzon may have been involved in a dispute that escalated violently. CMPD detectives believe that the victim was first stabbed multiple times during a confrontation, and then intentionally struck by a vehicle as he attempted to flee or was incapacitated.
While no suspects have been officially named, police confirmed that they are pursuing active leads and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby homes, businesses, and transit cameras. Detectives are also working to determine whether the suspect or suspects were known to Mouzon and what motivated the fatal attack.
“We are treating this as a homicide investigation and believe this was a targeted act of violence,” said CMPD Lieutenant Lisa Samuelson during a press briefing. “The level of brutality involved is deeply disturbing, and we are working around the clock to bring those responsible to justice.”
The NoDa area, known for its eclectic arts scene, vibrant nightlife, and historic charm, was shaken by the news of the killing. While the neighborhood has seen some rise in crime in recent years, violent incidents of this magnitude remain rare and have sparked urgent calls for enhanced safety and community support.
Jeremy Mouzon was remembered Monday by friends and family as a devoted father, brother, and friend, whose gentle nature and kind spirit left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
“He had a good heart,” said his younger sister, Monique Mouzon. “Jeremy wasn’t perfect, but he didn’t deserve this. He was the kind of guy who’d give his last dollar to help someone. Our family is heartbroken beyond words.”
According to family members, Mouzon had been living and working in Charlotte for several years and was trying to rebuild his life after experiencing hardships, including a brief period of homelessness. He had recently reconnected with his two teenage children and was hopeful about the future.
A growing memorial has been set up near the intersection where he was killed, with flowers, candles, and handwritten messages from community members expressing sorrow and outrage over his death.
“I didn’t know Jeremy personally, but we’ve all seen him around,” said local resident Anthony Grant. “To hear how he died—stabbed and run down like that—it’s beyond senseless. We need justice.”
CMPD is asking for the public’s assistance as the investigation continues. Anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident or who has information that could aid detectives is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Tipsters can remain anonymous, and a reward may be available for information leading to an arrest.
As the search for answers intensifies, the city of Charlotte now adds another name to its growing list of victims lost to violence—Jeremy Mouzon, whose life was cut short in the early hours of the morning, and whose memory will not soon be forgotten by those he leaves behind.
A vigil is being planned for later this week in the NoDa area to honor his life and call for peace, accountability, and healing.
