Tragedy at Goguac Lake: 20-Year-Old Drowns at Willard Beach Despite Swift Emergency Response

BATTLE CREEK, MI – A peaceful Saturday afternoon turned into a devastating tragedy when a 20-year-old man from Battle Creek lost his life in a drowning incident at Willard Beach on Goguac Lake. The incident occurred on June 21, 2025, at approximately 5:39 p.m., prompting a rapid and coordinated emergency response from multiple local agencies.

According to a statement from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), deputies were dispatched to the scene for a report of a possible drowning. Fortunately, members of the CCSO Marine Unit were already on routine patrol on the lake and were able to respond within minutes.

The CCSO immediately called for additional support from the Battle Creek Police Department, Battle Creek Fire Department, and LifeCare Ambulance Service. The Area Law Enforcement Underwater Recovery Team (ALURT) was also activated and dispatched to the scene to assist in search and recovery efforts.

Upon arrival, emergency responders began deploying all available resources. Battle Creek Police launched a drone to assist aerial search efforts, while the CCSO Marine Unit used Side-Scan Sonar technology to begin scanning the lake’s bottom. Shortly thereafter, dive team members from ALURT entered the water.

Tragically, the submerged victim was located near the buoy line. He was recovered by dive team members and brought aboard a rescue boat, where first responders immediately began CPR in a valiant effort to revive him. Life-saving measures continued as the victim was transported to shore, with Battle Creek Fire and LifeCare paramedics joining the resuscitation effort.

Despite the extensive emergency response and continued CPR, the young man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The identity of the deceased, a 20-year-old male from the City of Battle Creek, has not yet been released pending notification of his family. The WMED Medical Examiner responded to the scene to assist with forensic examination and to support the ongoing investigation into the cause of death.

This tragic incident prompted a multi-agency response, underscoring the community’s commitment to public safety and rapid emergency intervention. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office expressed its deep gratitude to all the agencies and individuals who assisted, including:

  • Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority

  • And the concerned community members who offered assistance and information

Willard Beach, which was temporarily closed during the emergency operation, is expected to reopen to the public on Sunday, June 22.
