Three Killed in Fiery Wrong-Way Crash on I-5 Near Coalinga, Sparks 90-Acre Wildfire
COALINGA, CA — A horrific and deadly collision on Interstate 5 Thursday evening claimed the lives of three people and ignited a fast-moving brush fire that burned roughly 90 acres in Fresno County. The crash, which occurred just north of Highway 145, was reported around 7:40 p.m. and involved three vehicles, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Cal Fire officials.
A Tragic Chain of Events
The incident began when a woman driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee was reportedly traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-5 — a dangerous and disoriented maneuver that would have devastating consequences.
At the same time, a utility van carrying a driver and one passenger was traveling northbound in the same lane, as intended. Behind the van was a 2021 Toyota Venza, carrying a 35-year-old driver and a passenger.
According to the preliminary investigation by CHP, the Jeep and the utility van collided head-on with tremendous force, causing both vehicles to become mangled and come to rest in the number one lane, both facing an easterly direction. Moments later, the Toyota Venza collided with the right side of the van, completing the deadly sequence of impacts.
Vehicles Engulfed in Flames
Within seconds of the final impact, all three vehicles became fully engulfed in flames, according to CHP and eyewitness accounts. Despite the efforts of bystanders and emergency crews rushing to the scene, the driver of the Jeep and both the driver and passenger of the utility van were unable to escape the inferno and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Miraculously, the driver and passenger of the Toyota Venza managed to flee their vehicle before it was consumed by fire. They sustained only minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

As the flames from the burning vehicles spread to nearby dry brush, a vegetation fire—later named the Coal Fire—quickly ignited and raced through the surrounding area. Cal Fire crews responded rapidly, working into the night to contain the blaze, which scorched an estimated 90 acres before it was brought under control.
Fire officials say the combination of intense heat, dry vegetation, and wind made for challenging conditions. Fortunately, no structures were threatened, and no firefighters were injured.
