Texas DPS Investigating Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Weslaco
WESLACO, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is actively investigating a tragic hit-and-run auto-pedestrian crash that claimed the life of a young woman early Sunday morning in Weslaco.
According to a press release from Texas DPS, the incident occurred at approximately 5:59 a.m. on Mile 4 West Road, just north of Mile 12 ½ Road North. The preliminary investigation reveals that 27-year-old Cassandra I. Hernandez, a Weslaco resident, was walking southbound in the southbound lane of Mile 4 W. Road when she was struck by an unknown vehicle.
Authorities report that the vehicle involved was a dark-colored passenger car, which was also traveling southbound at the time of the collision. After hitting Hernandez, the driver failed to stop and render aid, fleeing the scene immediately. Sadly, Hernandez succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sudden and violent nature of the crash has deeply shaken the local community. Cassandra Hernandez, described by friends and neighbors as a kind-hearted and vibrant individual, was walking alone when the incident occurred. Details regarding where she was coming from or headed to at the time have not yet been made public.
