Steve Harms: Beloved Upper Iowa University Alumnus, Trustee, and Philanthropist Passes Away at 74
It is with deep sadness and reverence that we announce the unexpected passing of Steve Harms, a beloved alumnus, visionary leader, and unwavering supporter of Upper Iowa University (UIU). Steve passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, leaving behind a legacy defined by integrity, generosity, and a profound commitment to the institution and community he cherished.
Born and raised in Sumner, Iowa, just a few miles from UIU’s Fayette campus, Steve’s connection to Upper Iowa was more than geographic—it was rooted in family, passion, and purpose. Choosing UIU for its small-town charm and close-knit community, Steve arrived on campus with a deep love for football, the outdoors, and the kind of education that shaped not only students’ minds but their character.
Steve graduated in 1973 with a degree in physical education, proudly representing the Peacock football team and actively participating in the Foxes fraternity, where he built friendships that would last a lifetime. During his senior year, he met his soulmate and fellow classmate, Diane (Kinkead) Harms ’73, beginning a partnership that spanned decades. They married shortly after graduation and shared a lifetime of love, leadership, and service—until Diane’s passing in 2021.
Following his time at UIU, Steve began his career in education as a high school biology teacher and coach, where he continued mentoring young minds. He eventually transitioned to the insurance industry, where he excelled. Over the course of a remarkable 39-year career at Rain and Hail Insurance Services, Steve rose to become President and Chairman of the Board of Rain and Hail, LLC and Agri General Insurance Company, retiring in 2012. His business acumen and commitment to ethical leadership earned him immense respect throughout the industry.
Yet, despite his professional success, Steve’s heart never left UIU. He and Diane poured their love, time, and resources into the university that gave them their start. In 2019, they were inducted into the UIU Hall of Fame in recognition of their transformational philanthropy and lifelong dedication to the institution.
Their generosity touched nearly every aspect of the campus community. From leading efforts to renovate Harms-Eischeid Stadium, to endowing the UIU cheer program, and supporting key campus upgrades—including the Rec Center, Dorman Gym, academic buildings, and the President’s Residence—Steve and Diane’s legacy is cemented in UIU’s past, present, and future.
In addition to his philanthropic impact, Steve served on the UIU Board of Trustees since 2001, providing steadfast leadership, wisdom, and advocacy for over two decades. His influence shaped pivotal decisions and guided the university through critical moments in its history, including the successful transition to the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) for athletics.
But beyond the accolades and achievements, Steve Harms was a man of uncommon warmth, humility, and heart. Known for his big smile, sincere kindness, and unmistakable Peacock pride, he embodied the values that make the Upper Iowa University community special. He remained deeply connected to faculty, students, and alumni alike, always showing up, always cheering on, and always giving back.
Steve’s passing is not just a loss to UIU—it is a loss to every life he touched with his mentorship, friendship, and spirit. His story is one of impact, not just in buildings and boardrooms, but in the people who carry his influence forward.
To the Harms family, we extend our deepest condolences. Your grief is shared by the entire UIU family, and we stand with you in honoring a man who gave so much, so selflessly.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:23
Rest in peace, Steve Harms.
Your legacy lives on in every student inspired, every brick laid, and every heart lifted at Upper Iowa University.
You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
