Spencerville Mourns the Tragic Loss of 19-Year-Old Kaiya Elle Bontrager After Fatal Vehicle Collision

SPENCERVILLE, IN — An overwhelming sense of grief has settled over the town of Spencerville and the surrounding communities following the devastating and untimely death of Kaiya Elle Bontrager, a vibrant 19-year-old woman whose life was tragically cut short in a vehicle collision on the morning of Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, the fatal crash occurred during the early hours as Kaiya was driving to work. Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, but despite their efforts, Kaiya was pronounced dead due to the severity of the crash. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, but no foul play is suspected.

News of Kaiya’s passing has left the community in a state of collective mourning. Described by family and friends as a radiant soul with an infectious smile and an unstoppable drive, Kaiya had just begun her journey into adulthood. She was known not only for her kindness and compassion but also for her ambition and her unwavering dedication to her goals.

A graduate of Eastside High School, Kaiya was deeply involved in student activities, community service, and athletics during her time there. She was admired by peers and teachers alike for her leadership, her work ethic, and her heart for others. After high school, Kaiya began working full time while preparing to pursue a career in nursing — a path she chose because of her desire to care for others and make a meaningful difference in the world.

“She had this natural ability to lift people up,” said Megan Lahr, one of Kaiya’s closest friends. “Even on your worst day, Kaiya would find a way to make you laugh or remind you of your worth. She made people feel seen and loved — and that’s a rare gift.”

Kaiya’s family has asked the public to remember her not for the tragic way her life ended, but for the beautiful, compassionate, and determined young woman she was. In a heartfelt statement, her parents described her as “a daughter who brought joy to every room, who was endlessly curious, who loved fiercely, and who left a mark on everyone she met.”

In the wake of her passing, a wave of support has poured in from friends, classmates, coworkers, and community members. A memorial fund has been established to assist the Bontrager family with funeral expenses and to support a scholarship in Kaiya’s name — a tribute to her passion for learning and helping others. Plans are also underway to dedicate a bench or memorial garden at Eastside High School in her honor.

A public memorial service and celebration of life will be held this Saturday at Spencerville Community Church, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. and services to follow at noon. Attendees are encouraged to wear Kaiya’s favorite colors — sky blue and lavender — to celebrate her life and the light she brought into the world.

As Spencerville continues to process this heartbreaking loss, the message shared by many is clear: Kaiya Elle Bontrager was loved deeply, and her memory will continue to inspire those who knew her to live with more kindness, more joy, and more purpose.
