Southport Mass Shooting: Oak Island Man Charged with Three Counts of Murder, Multiple Felonies After Waterfront Tragedy

SOUTHPORT, N.C. — Authorities have confirmed the arrest of Nigel Max Edge, 40, of Oak Island, in connection with the horrific mass shooting that shook the Southport community late Saturday night. The violence unfolded at the American Fish Company, a popular waterfront bar at the Southport Yacht Basin, leaving three people dead and several others wounded in one of the deadliest incidents the town has ever faced.

Arrest and Charges

According to newly filed court documents, Edge is facing 13 felony charges in Brunswick County, including:

  • Three counts of first-degree murder
  • Five counts of attempted first-degree murder
  • Five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury

Authorities say additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.

The Incident

The shooting erupted just before 10 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, when patrons were gathered at the waterfront establishment. Witnesses reported a chaotic scene of panic as shots rang out, sending people scrambling for cover along the marina docks. Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies, including the Southport Police Department, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, responded within minutes.

Despite the swift response, three victims were pronounced dead at the scene. At least nine others were transported to area hospitals with gunshot wounds and other injuries. Officials say some victims remain in critical condition.

Suspect Background

Edge, who has a history of legal disputes and reported paranoia, was taken into custody without incident early Sunday morning after investigators traced him to his Oak Island residence. Federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, are assisting in reviewing his past records, potential motives, and whether the shooting may have been premeditated.

Court filings and public records show that Edge—who formerly went by the name Sean William DeBevoise—has previously been tied to unusual lawsuits and allegations of personal vendettas. Officials, however, caution against drawing conclusions until the investigation is complete.

Community Impact

The Southport community, known for its small-town charm and bustling waterfront tourism, is grappling with shock and grief in the wake of the tragedy. Flowers, candles, and handwritten notes have begun to line the entrance to the American Fish Company as locals gather to mourn the victims.

Mayor and city leaders have pledged full cooperation with law enforcement, while urging residents to remain united. “This is a heartbreaking moment for Southport,” one city official said. “We are a close-knit town, and we will get through this together.”

Ongoing Investigation

Edge is being held without bond in the Brunswick County Detention Center. His first court appearance is expected this week, where prosecutors may seek additional enhancements given the severity of the crimes.

Law enforcement continues to urge anyone with photos, videos, or information related to Saturday night’s events to contact investigators immediately.
