Six People Shot and Wounded in San Francisco Bayview Gathering; Suspect Arrested Shortly After
San Francisco, Calif. — A marijuana-related gathering in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood turned violent late Tuesday evening when gunfire erupted near 3rd Street and Burke Avenue, leaving six people wounded, according to authorities.
The Shooting
The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) reported that officers responded after multiple 911 calls about shots fired at approximately 9 p.m. Upon arrival, police found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds in and around the gathering.
Emergency responders transported the injured individuals to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFGH), the city’s primary trauma center. All six victims were listed in conditions ranging from stable to serious. Authorities have not released the names of those injured.
Arrest Near Hospital
Shortly after the Bayview shooting, SFPD officers detained a suspect outside Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital in connection with gunfire reported nearby. Investigators believe the incident may be linked to the earlier violence at the Bayview gathering, though they have not yet confirmed whether the same weapon was used.
Police emphasized that the situation remains under investigation. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and gathering ballistic evidence from both crime scenes.
Community Reaction
Local business owner Matt Boschetto, whose shop is located not far from where the shooting took place, described the event as both “disturbing and heartbreaking.”
“Our neighborhood has been working hard to build a safe, vibrant community,” Boschetto said. “Incidents like this set us back, and they hurt the small businesses and families who want nothing more than peace.”
Bayview community leader Theo Ellington, a longtime advocate for neighborhood safety and development, echoed those concerns.
“The Bayview is a proud community, full of resilience and strength,” Ellington said. “But when we see six people shot in one evening, it underscores how urgently we need stronger violence-prevention programs, better resources for our youth, and deeper collaboration between the city and residents.”
Broader Concerns
The Bayview neighborhood has long grappled with the intersection of economic challenges and public safety concerns. While community groups have worked to revitalize the area and reduce violence, Tuesday’s shooting highlighted persistent difficulties in addressing gun violence across San Francisco.
In recent years, city leaders have pushed for more funding for neighborhood-based initiatives, including workforce development, educational opportunities, and violence intervention programs. Advocates argue that continued investment in these programs is key to reducing cycles of violence.
Police Investigation Ongoing
The SFPD has not released information on potential motives, though early reports suggest the gathering where the shooting occurred was marijuana-related. Authorities are not ruling out connections to disputes or other criminal activity.
Police urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact their tip line, stressing the importance of community cooperation in solving the case.
A City on Edge
The twin scenes — a mass injury shooting in Bayview followed by gunfire near the city’s main hospital — rattled residents across San Francisco. For many, the incidents underscored the need for a renewed focus on gun safety and neighborhood security.
“This is about more than just one night of violence,” Ellington added. “It’s about how we move forward as a city, ensuring no family has to endure the trauma that so many now face.”
