Shooting Inside Amick Farm: One Dead, Several Injured in Workplace Tragedy
SALUDA COUNTY, S.C. — A sense of shock and sorrow has gripped the quiet farming community of Saluda County after a tragic shooting unfolded inside Amick Farm, leaving one person dead and several others injured. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning at the poultry processing plant, which employs hundreds of workers from across the region.
According to preliminary reports from the Saluda County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to Amick Farm just after 6:45 a.m. following multiple reports of gunfire inside the facility. When law enforcement officers arrived, they found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, while one individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have confirmed that the suspect, believed to be an employee or former employee, opened fire during an early shift inside one of the processing areas before fleeing the scene. After a brief search, deputies reportedly detained a person of interest several miles away from the plant. Investigators are now working to determine a motive behind the violent outburst.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy,” said Sheriff Josh Price, addressing reporters during a press briefing. “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and every member of the Amick Farm community affected by this senseless act of violence. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has joined the investigation to assist with forensic analysis and evidence collection. Authorities spent much of the day interviewing employees and reviewing security footage to piece together the moments leading up to the shooting.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos and fear as workers ran for cover amid the sound of gunfire. One employee, who asked not to be identified, said, “People were screaming and running everywhere. We didn’t know what was happening — everyone just tried to get out as fast as they could.”
Amick Farm, a major poultry processing facility and one of the largest employers in the area, temporarily suspended operations as the investigation continues.
