“She’s Hurting Me!”: A Black Mother’s Peaceful Protest Turns into a Nightmare During Illegal Eviction
April 11, 2025 – What started as an ordinary morning turned into a terrifying ordeal for Vontese Wines, a Black single mother, when she was confronted with an illegal eviction attempt at her home. The event, caught on video and now widely shared across social media platforms, has sparked outrage over racial injustice, abuse of power, and the desperate need for tenant protections in America.
A Locksmith, a Drill, and No Legal Notice
It was still early when Vontese Wines heard the sound of drilling at her door. A locksmith, hired without any formal court order or eviction notice, was already halfway through dismantling her lock. The confusion quickly turned to fear and disbelief. Wines opened the door to find Lisa Anderson, her white landlord, standing there, attempting to force her out of her home.
The most shocking part? Wines’ rent wasn’t even late. She had been enduring months of pressure from Anderson, who had reportedly been demanding early rent payments—an ongoing stress that left Wines and her young son walking on eggshells in their own home. But on this day, that pressure escalated into what Wines and her supporters are calling an illegal and racially motivated eviction attempt.
The Collapse and the Lie
When Wines stood her ground—peacefully, and from her own threshold—things took a disturbing turn. Without warning or provocation, Anderson collapsed to the ground and began screaming, “She’s hurting me!”
There was no contact, as video evidence would soon show. Wines never touched Anderson. The video, now under review by civil rights attorneys and public defenders, shows Wines standing calmly, visibly shocked as Anderson cries out with crocodile tears—a scene hauntingly reminiscent of the Central Park “Karen” incident, where false accusations were weaponized against a Black person.
In that moment, Wines experienced what so many Black Americans fear: a fabricated accusation with the potential to change—or end—your life.
Panic, Police, and No Protection
While Anderson filed a false police report, Wines—terrified, traumatized, and already trying to protect her son—suffered a panic attack. The physical toll of the moment was only matched by the emotional weight: the realization that even when you do everything right, you can still be targeted, criminalized, and painted as a threat.
Wines and her child made the heartbreaking decision to flee the property for their own safety, now effectively displaced and waiting for justice that, so far, has not come.
Illegal Eviction and Racial Injustice
Housing advocates have since confirmed that no legal eviction process had been initiated. There was no court order, no sheriff’s deputy, no due process. Just a landlord taking matters into her own hands—unlawfully and dangerously.
Legal experts have pointed out that this case highlights several issues:
- Illegal eviction practices, particularly against tenants of color
- Weaponization of false claims by white individuals against Black people
- The emotional and psychological trauma inflicted by such abuse of power
- The lack of immediate legal accountability for landlords engaging in such behavior
Despite the video evidence, no charges have been filed against Anderson, and the false report remains unpunished.
Wines Speaks Out: “We Just Want to Be Safe”
In a brief but powerful statement, Wines said, “I just want to raise my son in peace. I pay my rent. I follow the rules. And still, I was treated like I don’t belong in my own home. That’s not okay. This can’t happen to another family.”
Her story has since gained traction among tenant rights organizations, civil rights attorneys, and community leaders, who are calling for an investigation into Anderson’s actions and a broader examination of how tenants—especially Black tenants—are too often left vulnerable to unlawful eviction and racial profiling.
The Bigger Picture
Wines’ case is not isolated. Across the country, Black renters are disproportionately subjected to:
- Harassment from landlords
- Displacement without due process
- Discriminatory housing practices
- False criminal accusations with devastating consequences
As more people learn about what happened to Vontese Wines, pressure is mounting on local authorities to act. Advocates are demanding:
- Immediate accountability for Lisa Anderson, including charges for filing a false police report
- Stronger enforcement of anti-eviction laws
- Legislation that protects tenants from landlord retaliation and racial discrimination
