SAN DIEGO — Authorities have identified the man killed in a broad-daylight shooting in the Miramar area earlier this week as 57-year-old Markus Vega, according to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD).
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 8600 block of Production Avenue, near Camino Santa Fe, an industrial corridor lined with warehouses and businesses. Police said Vega was seated in the front passenger seat of a parked vehicle when an unidentified assailant approached and opened fire.
Officers and paramedics arrived within minutes after multiple 911 calls reported gunshots. Vega was found gravely wounded inside the vehicle. Despite lifesaving efforts at the scene, he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
The driver of the vehicle, who has not been publicly identified, was not physically harmed during the attack. Investigators questioned the driver along with several witnesses who were in the area at the time. Detectives have not yet disclosed whether Vega was specifically targeted or if the shooting was random.
Homicide detectives spent several hours combing the scene for shell casings, bullet fragments, and surveillance video from nearby businesses. By late evening, crime scene tape still surrounded portions of the street as police worked to reconstruct the sequence of events.
“This was a brazen act of violence carried out in broad daylight,” SDPD Lt. Steve Shebloski said. “We are asking anyone who may have seen something unusual in the area or who may have video footage to contact our homicide unit immediately.”
Neighbors and workers in the Miramar area expressed shock over the gunfire, noting that while the neighborhood is busy with daily commercial activity, violent incidents of this nature are rare. “It’s scary because it was still light out, and there are usually a lot of people around here at that time,” one witness said.
Authorities have not announced any arrests or identified a suspect. Investigators are working to determine a possible motive and whether Vega had any known disputes or connections that may have led to the attack.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Vega’s identity Thursday morning and will conduct a full autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police are urging anyone with information to call SDPD’s homicide unit or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers. A reward may be offered for information leading to an arrest.
As of Friday evening, the case remains open, with authorities emphasizing that the public’s assistance will be critical in bringing the shooter to justice.
