Saltville Woman Killed in Domestic Stabbing; Husband in Custody
Saltville, VA – A tragic act of domestic violence has left a woman dead and her husband facing murder charges after a stabbing late Saturday night in Smyth County. Authorities have confirmed that 31-year-old Daniel Baptiste has been arrested and charged following the killing of his wife, Morgan Gillespie Baptiste, in their Saltville home.
The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. on Saturday in the 100 block of Daydream Ridge Road, when officers with the Saltville Police Department, along with Virginia State Police, responded to reports of a stabbing. Upon arrival, they discovered Morgan Baptiste had suffered fatal injuries. Despite emergency efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the stabbing, Daniel Baptiste allegedly fled the area, sparking a swift search by local and state law enforcement. He was later tracked down and taken into custody in a wooded area near Highway 107, not far from the residence. Authorities reported that he was arrested without further incident.
Baptiste is now facing first-degree murder charges, along with use of a weapon in the commission of a felony. He is currently being held without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon as the investigation continues.
In the wake of the tragedy, Commonwealth’s Attorney Phillip “Bucky” Blevins issued a statement commending law enforcement’s coordinated response and reaffirming the commitment of his office to pursue justice.
“Domestic violence and murder have no place in our society,” Blevins said. “My office stands with the victim’s family, and we will honor her life and memory by seeing justice through the courts.”
