Remembering Savannah Mason: Tragic Loss in Purdue Mascot Vehicle Crash
The Lafayette community is mourning the untimely death of 23-year-old Savannah Mason, who was killed in a tragic accident involving Purdue University’s iconic mascot vehicle, the Boilermaker Special, on Thursday, April 24, 2025. The crash occurred around 4 p.m. on U.S. Highway 52 near Wyandotte Road in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.
The Incident
According to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, the Boilermaker Special was traveling northbound when its front driver-side tire suffered a catastrophic blowout. This mechanical failure caused the vehicle to veer across the median into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with Mason’s southbound car. She was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy confirmed that Mason died from injuries sustained in the crash, and her death was ruled accidental.
The Boilermaker Special, a train-shaped vehicle operated by Purdue’s Reamer Club, was being driven by Madison Cook, a 20-year-old junior in the Polytechnic Institute. Her passenger, 22-year-old Taylor Melton, a senior in the College of Agriculture, was also on board. Both students were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released.
Investigation and Response
The Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Division is assisting the sheriff’s department in investigating the crash, focusing on potential mechanical issues that may have contributed to the accident.
Purdue University released a statement expressing condolences to all those affected by the incident. “Our thoughts are with all those impacted by the incident,” the university said.
