Remembering Emery Chalekian: A Bright Light Lost Too Soon
The Encinitas community is mourning the tragic loss of 12-year-old Emery Chalekian, who was fatally struck in a crosswalk during a two-vehicle collision on the evening of Friday, April 25, 2025. The accident occurred around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and Village Square Drive.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, a Nissan Xterra driven by a 44-year-old man collided with a southbound Ford Fusion, also operated by a 44-year-old man. The impact caused the Xterra to veer into the crosswalk, striking Emery as she was crossing the street. Despite immediate emergency response, Emery succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Both drivers remained at the scene and are cooperating with investigators. Preliminary reports indicate that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash. The incident remains under active investigation by the North Coastal Station Traffic Investigators and the Sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team.
Emery was a beloved student at Park Dale Lane Elementary School, known for her bright spirit, kindness, and enthusiasm for learning. She had a passion for reading, played the flute, and even started a friendship bracelet business with her best friend. Her teachers described her as an “old soul” with a compassionate heart.
In the wake of this tragedy, the community has rallied around the Chalekian family. A Meal Train has been organized to provide meals and support during this difficult time. Additionally, a memorial has been established at Park Dale Lane Elementary, adorned with flowers, stuffed animals, and heartfelt messages from classmates and neighbors. On Monday, April 27, students and staff wore yellow—Emery’s favorite color—in her honor.
The Chalekian family has expressed their profound gratitude for the outpouring of love and support. They remember Emery as the light of their lives, a joyful presence whose memory will forever be cherished.
