Princeton Police Investigating Shooting on Thorton Avenue Near Local Church
The Princeton Police Department is conducting an investigation into a shooting that occurred late Sunday morning, leaving a woman with minor injuries.
The Incident
Deputy Chief R.S. Gibson confirmed that the incident unfolded around 10:50 a.m. on Thorton Avenue, in close proximity to Silver Springs Baptist Church. According to preliminary findings, the violence stemmed from a heated argument between two separate groups of individuals.
At some point during the dispute, the confrontation escalated, and gunfire was exchanged. While no one was directly struck by bullets, police believe a woman was hit by shrapnel or debris from the gunfire. She was treated for her injuries and later released, Gibson said.
Church Services Interrupted by Violence Nearby
At the time of the shooting, Sunday services were being held at Silver Springs Baptist Church, raising concerns for parishioners and the surrounding community. Authorities emphasized, however, that the altercation was not connected to the church or its members. Still, the proximity of gunfire to a house of worship deeply unsettled those in attendance.
Residents reported hearing the commotion and expressed alarm that such violence unfolded during a typically quiet morning in the neighborhood.
Ongoing Investigation
As of now, no arrests have been made, and police have not released details on the identities of those involved. Detectives are continuing to interview witnesses, gather evidence, and review possible surveillance footage from the area.
Deputy Chief Gibson noted that the incident remains under active investigation, with officers working to determine what sparked the argument and who was responsible for firing shots.
Community Concerns
The shooting has heightened concerns among residents who say the escalation of disputes into gunfire is becoming all too common. Community leaders have urged calm and cooperation with law enforcement to help bring accountability to those involved.
Silver Springs Baptist Church also released a brief statement through members, asking for prayers not only for the woman who was injured but also for peace in the broader community.
