PONTIAC, MI — Authorities Foil Potential Mass Shooting at School Graduation; One Arrested, One Still at Large
A tragedy was narrowly avoided earlier this week in Pontiac, Michigan, after law enforcement officials thwarted a potential mass shooting at a school graduation ceremony, thanks to a crucial tip from a concerned citizen and the swift action of deputies already on the scene.
According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the incident unfolded on the evening of Tuesday, June 3, during a graduation ceremony for the Arts and Technology Academy of Pontiac, which was being held at a local business venue. The school, which serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade, had gathered families and graduates in celebration when the threat emerged.
Deputies were initially on site in response to an unrelated physical altercation when they were approached by a bystander who reported a disturbing Snapchat post. The post allegedly threatened to “shoot up” the graduation.
“A person informed our deputies that a family member had seen a Snapchat post with a direct threat,” Sheriff Bouchard said during a Friday press conference. “Based on that information, deputies acted immediately.”
Their swift response led to the discovery of two loaded firearms, each equipped with high-capacity magazines, concealed beneath vehicles in the parking lot. Sheriff Bouchard stated unequivocally that the rapid intervention by law enforcement “probably prevented a mass shooting.”
Suspects Identified
Authorities arrested 19-year-old Deahveon Shamar-James Whaley, who is now in custody. A second suspect, 20-year-old Jamarion Jaryante Hardiman, remains at large, and an active search is underway. Officials have issued a public plea for help locating Hardiman, urging anyone with information to call the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office or dial 911 immediately.
Neither Whaley nor Hardiman are students at the Arts and Technology Academy, but both have personal or family connections to individuals who were present at the graduation event.
Sheriff Bouchard noted that the suspects were allegedly involved in ongoing community disputes and have documented histories involving firearms and violence. “This was disturbingly close to being another mass casualty event,” he said gravely.
Alarming Echoes of Past Tragedies
The incident has reignited concerns in Oakland County, which is still healing from the devastating 2021 Oxford High School shooting, where four students lost their lives and several others were wounded. That tragedy remains a stark reminder of the vulnerability of schools and the importance of proactive community engagement.
“This underscores how vital it is that people speak up when they see or hear something,” Bouchard emphasized. “If you see something, say something. That simple act can save lives.”
In this case, while the threatening Snapchat message had been seen before the ceremony, it was only reported after officers had already arrived for a different disturbance. Sheriff Bouchard praised the individual who eventually came forward, saying their decision may have averted disaster.
Investigation Ongoing
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from state and federal agencies, continues to investigate the full extent of the threat and whether any other individuals may have been involved. Authorities are examining the suspects’ digital footprints and communication records, trying to determine their exact intentions and timeline.
Law enforcement presence has been increased around local schools and graduation ceremonies in the region as a precaution.
Public Appeal
Officials are calling on the public to help locate Jamarion Jaryante Hardiman, and stress that tips can be anonymous. Rewards may be offered for information leading to his arrest.
The Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to remain alert, especially during graduation season, and to report suspicious behavior without hesitation.
As the community breathes a collective sigh of relief, many are also reflecting on how close Pontiac came to joining the growing list of cities devastated by mass violence — and how a single voice speaking up may have saved dozens of lives.
