Police Search for Suspect After Stabbing on University of Michigan Campus

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — A manhunt is underway after a stabbing on the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus Wednesday evening left one person injured and prompted campus-wide safety alerts.

The Incident

According to the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety & Security (DPSS), the stabbing was reported around 8:30 p.m. near Catherine Street and Zina Pitcher Place, an area that borders the university’s medical campus.

First responders immediately arrived on the scene to provide medical assistance to the victim, who was later transported to a local hospital. Their condition has not yet been released.

Suspect Description

Authorities quickly issued an alert to the campus community, describing the suspect as a heavyset Black male wearing a white shirt, tie, and jeans. A photo of the alleged suspect was also released by DPSS in hopes that the public can assist in locating him.

As of late Wednesday evening, the suspect remained at large. Police urged students and residents to avoid the area and report any sightings of the individual by calling 911.

Campus Alert and Safety Measures

The University of Michigan’s emergency alert system sent out warnings at 8:33 p.m., advising the community to steer clear of Catherine Street and Zina Pitcher Place while the search continued.

Officials emphasized that the investigation is active and that extra patrols are being deployed in and around the university to ensure safety.

Community Response

The stabbing has rattled both students and faculty, particularly given its proximity to campus housing and the University of Michigan Health System. Many expressed concern on social media, urging one another to stay indoors until more information is available.

“I just got the alert and locked my doors,” said one student who lives near the medical campus. “It’s scary knowing something like this can happen right outside your window.”

Ongoing Investigation

DPSS is working in coordination with Ann Arbor Police and other local agencies as they search for the suspect. Authorities have not yet provided details on a possible motive or whether the victim and suspect knew one another.

The university assured the public that updates will be provided as soon as credible information becomes available.

Call for Information

Anyone with information about the incident, or who recognizes the suspect from the photo released, is asked to contact the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety & Security immediately.
