Police Investigating Two Separate Fatal Shootings Overnight in Salem
Authorities in Salem, Oregon, are investigating after two men were killed in separate shootings overnight. The incidents, which occurred just an hour apart, have rattled the community and prompted an intensive police investigation, though officials say the cases are not believed to be connected.
First Shooting: 40th Place and Carson Drive Southeast
The first call came in around 12:30 a.m., when Salem police were dispatched to reports of a vehicle crash near 40th Place and Carson Drive Southeast. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a man lying in the roadway suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim was quickly transported to a local hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead. Authorities later identified him as 30-year-old Nicholas MacFawn.
Investigators remain at the scene collecting evidence, speaking with witnesses, and trying to determine what led up to the shooting. Police have not released details about possible suspects or vehicles involved.
Second Shooting: Wallace Marine Park
Just over an hour later, at approximately 1:30 a.m., officers responded to reports of gunfire at a homeless encampment in Wallace Marine Park.
Responding officers searched the wooded area in the northern section of the park, where they found another man who had been shot several times. Officers carried him out of the woods to waiting paramedics, but like in the earlier incident, the victim did not survive.
He was later identified as 60-year-old Jacob Collazo.
Investigation and Police Statement
Police say both deaths are being actively investigated by the Salem Police Department and the Marion County District Attorney’s Office. At this time, investigators have not found evidence suggesting that the two shootings are linked.
“While tragic, these incidents appear to be separate and unrelated,” Salem police said in a statement. “We are pursuing all leads in both cases to bring justice for the victims and answers for their families.”
No arrests have been announced, and authorities have not released suspect descriptions in either case.
Community Impact
The overnight violence has raised concerns in Salem, a city that has seen an uptick in violent crime in recent years. Residents living near 40th Place Southeast reported being startled by the sound of gunfire and sirens, while advocates for the homeless population at Wallace Marine Park expressed grief and frustration at the ongoing violence impacting vulnerable community members.
