A senseless act of recklessness ended in unthinkable tragedy on the night of Monday, August 4, 2025, when 17-year-old Nelson Michael Smith, of Providence, North Carolina, lost his life in a head-on collision caused by a vehicle fleeing from police. The crash occurred around 9:21 p.m. along Route 29, just south of R and L Smith Lane in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
According to the Virginia State Police, the heartbreaking sequence of events began when a trooper attempted to stop a Kia SUV in Halifax County for speeding—clocked at 73 mph in a 55 mph zone. Instead of pulling over, the driver—later identified as Alton Willie Devone Wade, 26, of Gum Spring, Virginia—chose to flee, sparking a dangerous police pursuit that spanned county lines.
As Wade crossed into Pittsylvania County, he made the deadly decision to begin traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Route 29. It didn’t take long before disaster struck. Traveling legally in his Ford Focus, Nelson Michael Smith had no time to react when Wade’s vehicle came hurtling toward him.
The collision was head-on and catastrophic.
Despite wearing his seatbelt, Nelson sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was only 17 years old—a bright young man with his whole life ahead of him. In a matter of seconds, an entire future was taken, and a family left forever broken.

Wade has since been charged in connection with Nelson’s death, along with multiple additional charges related to the pursuit, evading law enforcement, and driving against the flow of traffic.
