Pedestrian Killed in Fountain Crash, Motorcyclist Severely Injured
FOUNTAIN, Colo. — The Fountain Police Department (FPD) has confirmed that a pedestrian died following a crash at the intersection of Highway 85 and Main Street on the evening of Tuesday, September 30. The tragic incident happened just after 7 p.m. and prompted a major emergency response in the area.
According to investigators, the crash involved a motorcycle traveling south on South Highway 85 as it approached the busy intersection of Main Street. At the same time, a pedestrian, later identified as 44-year-old Sharla Willer, was walking across the northern crosswalk from east to west. Authorities say Willer entered the crosswalk against the pedestrian crossing indicator, putting her directly in the path of the oncoming motorcycle.
Despite life-saving efforts, Willer succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The motorcyclist, whose identity has not yet been released, suffered severe injuries in the collision and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their current condition has not been publicly updated.
Police emphasized that their preliminary investigation does not suggest alcohol or drug impairment played a role in the crash. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances leading up to the incident, including traffic signal timing, speed, and other contributing factors.
The intersection of Highway 85 and Main Street is a heavily trafficked area in Fountain, with both vehicle and pedestrian traffic often converging during evening hours. Local residents expressed concern about safety at the crossing, noting that visibility and timing of lights can be challenging for both drivers and pedestrians.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing, and they urge both motorists and pedestrians to exercise heightened caution when navigating intersections, especially during nighttime hours.
The death of Sharla Willer marks yet another heartbreaking reminder of the dangers pedestrians face on roadways. The Fountain community is mourning her loss, while also wishing for the motorcyclist’s recovery.
