One Killed, One Critically Injured in Early Morning Crash in Calcasieu Parish

Louisiana State Police Investigating Fatal Collision on LA 14 near Linkswiller Road

Lake Charles, LA – Louisiana State Police Troop D is investigating a tragic two-vehicle crash that occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 24, 2025, on Louisiana Highway 14 near Linkswiller Road. The crash claimed the life of 25-year-old Jacob Hummel, a Lake Charles resident, and left another driver critically injured.

Details of the Crash

According to the preliminary investigation, the collision took place shortly before 2:00 a.m., when Hummel was traveling southbound in a 2021 Ram Pickup on LA 14. A 2003 Jeep Wrangler, also heading southbound, was following behind on the same roadway.

For reasons that remain under investigation, Hummel attempted to execute a U-turn across the southbound lanes. As he maneuvered the pickup into the oncoming path of the Jeep, the Jeep struck the driver’s side door of the Ram, causing a devastating impact.

Fatal Outcome and Critical Injury

Despite being properly restrained, Jacob Hummel sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office. The driver of the Jeep Wrangler, who was also wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, suffered critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment.

Authorities have not released the name of the injured driver pending notification of family and further investigation.

Ongoing Investigation and Safety Reminder

As part of standard procedure, toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and have been submitted for laboratory analysis. Results are pending, and Troop D’s investigation remains active as troopers continue to determine the exact factors that contributed to this fatal collision.

In the wake of this tragic event, Louisiana State Police is once again urging all motorists to make safe and responsible decisions behind the wheel. In a statement from Trooper First Class Matt Gaspard, Troop D’s Public Affairs Officer, the message was clear:

“Every time you get behind the wheel, your choices matter — for yourself and for everyone on the road around you. Never drive impaired, fatigued, or distracted. Crashes like these remind us how quickly things can go wrong. While not all crashes are survivable, taking the right precautions — like wearing your seat belt, avoiding risky behavior, and staying alert — can dramatically reduce your chances of serious injury or death.”

Community Response

The loss of Jacob Hummel has sent shockwaves through the Lake Charles community, where he was known as a hardworking, kind, and generous young man. Family and friends are mourning the sudden and tragic end to a life filled with promise. Meanwhile, hopes remain high for the recovery of the second driver involved in the crash.

As the investigation continues, Troopers are asking any witnesses or individuals with relevant information to come forward and assist in piecing together the full sequence of events.
