NYSDOT Mourns Loss of Highway Supervisor Robert Bornt After Tragic Work Zone Crash in Pittstown

On the afternoon of Thursday, May 29, 2025, a tragic incident occurred on State Route 7 in Pittstown, New York, resulting in the death of Robert Bornt, a 54-year-old Highway Maintenance Supervisor with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and the fire chief of the Hoosick Falls Fire Department.

According to the New York State Police, the incident happened around 2:15 p.m. near the intersection of Campbell Lane. Bornt was performing flagging operations when he was struck by a westbound vehicle. He sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning. 

The driver involved in the incident remained at the scene, and no arrests have been made as the investigation continues. 

Bornt was a 22-year veteran of the NYSDOT and was deeply respected in his community. The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department expressed their condolences, stating, “Our condolences go out to his family and the entire membership of the Hoosick Falls Fire Department as well as his NYS DOT family.” 

NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez described Bornt as a “hardworking, dedicated and beloved …  She emphasized the department’s focus on supporting Bornt’s family and the wellbeing of NY …  across the state. 

Governor Kathy Hochul also issued a statement, calling the incident a “senseless tragedy” and highlighting the importance of work zone safety. She urged drivers to slow down and pay attention in highway work zones to ensure the safety of both the traveling public and the workers. 

This incident has sparked renewed calls for increased highway safety measures to protect workers who risk their lives daily to maintain and improve the state’s infrastructure. The loss of Robert Bornt serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers faced by highway maintenance personnel and the critical importance of adhering to work zone safety protocols.
