New York Tourist Fatally Shot in La Perla, San Juan; Two Others Injured
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — A 25-year-old tourist from New York was shot and killed late Friday night in the La Perla neighborhood of San Juan, authorities confirmed. The victim, identified as Kevin Mares of Queens, New York, was visiting Puerto Rico with his girlfriend to attend a Bad Bunny concert when the deadly incident occurred.
According to preliminary reports, Mares and his girlfriend were spending the evening in La Perla, a well-known coastal neighborhood just outside Old San Juan, when they stopped at a local bar. Witnesses told police that Mares allegedly exchanged words with a group of local men before the confrontation escalated into gunfire.
Police said that Mares was struck multiple times and died at the scene despite efforts from emergency responders. Two additional individuals, whose names have not yet been released, sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. Both are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, and their conditions have not been disclosed.
La Perla, though famous for its colorful cliffside views and as the filming location for music videos such as Luis Fonsi’s Despacito, has also been known for sporadic episodes of violent crime. Local authorities quickly cordoned off the area Friday night as forensic teams and detectives worked to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
Puerto Rico Police confirmed they are actively investigating the shooting, reviewing surveillance footage from nearby establishments, and speaking to patrons who were present during the altercation. No arrests have been announced, and the motive remains under investigation.
News of Mares’ death has shocked both the tourism community and residents in Queens, where friends and family describe him as an outgoing and ambitious young man with a bright future. His girlfriend, who was unharmed in the shooting, is reportedly cooperating with investigators.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Puerto Rico Police Department’s confidential tip line at 787-343-2020. Officials have also reiterated that while Puerto Rico welcomes millions of visitors each year without incident, tourists should remain aware of their surroundings and avoid confrontations.
The investigation remains ongoing.
