New Scotland Farmworker Arrested in Sexual Assault Investigation Involving Teen
A New Scotland man has been arrested in connection with a sexual assault investigation involving a 16-year-old girl, the Albany County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Thursday.
Deputies said 38-year-old Hubert Campbell faces multiple felony charges following his arrest earlier this week.
Alleged Assault Reported
According to investigators, the Sheriff’s Office received a report on September 15 that a sexual assault had occurred involving Campbell and the teenage victim. Detectives allege that Campbell had been in communication with the girl through Facebook, where conversations ultimately led to an arranged meeting.
It was during that meeting, authorities said, that Campbell allegedly raped the victim.
Farmworker in U.S. on H-2A Program
Officials confirmed that Campbell is in the United States through the H-2A temporary agricultural worker program, which allows foreign nationals to work seasonally on U.S. farms.
The Sheriff’s Office did not provide details on his employer or length of stay in the country but stated that Campbell had been residing in the New Scotland area as part of his work placement.
Arrest and Charges
Campbell was taken into custody following the investigation and charged with two counts of third-degree rape, both felonies under New York State law.
He was arraigned before the Town of New Scotland Court, where a stay-away order of protection was issued on behalf of the victim. Campbell was remanded to the Albany County Correctional Facility pending further court proceedings.
Sheriff’s Office Statement
The Albany County Sheriff’s Office stressed its commitment to protecting vulnerable victims, particularly minors, and said the arrest underscores the importance of monitoring online communications.
“Cases like this highlight the dangers that can arise when predators use social media platforms to target young people,” the department said in a statement. “We encourage parents and guardians to remain vigilant and engaged in their children’s online activities.”
Community Impact and Next Steps
The arrest has sent ripples through the New Scotland community, raising concerns about safety, trust, and oversight within temporary worker programs. While Campbell’s legal status in the U.S. is tied to farm labor employment, his arrest could also have immigration consequences depending on the outcome of the case.
Campbell remains in custody, and additional court appearances are expected in the coming weeks. The Albany County District Attorney’s Office will be handling prosecution.
The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing and urged anyone with further information related to Campbell to contact detectives.
