Minerva Man Killed in Polaris RZR Rollover in Augusta Township

CARROLL COUNTY, Ohio — Authorities confirmed that a 36-year-old Minerva man, Curtis Jays, tragically died Wednesday evening after a rollover accident involving a Polaris RZR side-by-side vehicle in Augusta Township. The incident occurred in an open field near his residence on 9173 Manor Road NE, according to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.

The Accident

The crash happened around 6:56 p.m., when Jays was reportedly operating the Polaris RZR and attempted a sharp turn, causing the vehicle to overturn. Investigators said the vehicle rolled, partially ejecting Jays, before coming to rest on its left side. The roll cage trapped him, making it impossible for him to escape on his own.

Emergency personnel from the Sandy Creek Joint Fire District were first to arrive at the scene and confirmed Jays was deceased at the scene. Additional support was provided by the Augusta Township Volunteer Fire Department, who assisted with securing the area and managing the aftermath of the accident.

Investigation

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the rollover. Authorities have noted that no other vehicles were involved and there are no indications of foul play at this time. Investigators will continue to assess the terrain, vehicle condition, and any contributing factors to determine what led to the fatal accident.

Community Reaction

Neighbors and community members have expressed shock and sadness over Jays’ death. Those who knew him described him as a dedicated family man and active member of the local community. The incident has served as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with recreational off-road vehicles.

Safety Considerations

Officials continue to remind the public about safety precautions when operating off-road vehicles, including the importance of using seat belts, helmets, and following proper handling guidelines to reduce the risk of rollovers and serious injuries.

Moving Forward

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office asks anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has information relevant to the investigation to come forward. The crash remains under investigation, and authorities will release additional details as they become available.

Curtis Jays’ death is a tragic loss for the Minerva and Augusta Township communities, and local officials urge residents to remain vigilant and prioritize safety while using recreational vehicles.
