Man Identified in Fatal High Falls Accident at Tettegouche State Park

SILVER BAY, Minn. – Authorities have identified the man who tragically drowned Monday after jumping from High Falls in Tettegouche State Park. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the victim as Gregory Corniea, 54, of Edina, Minnesota.

According to officials, the incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. as Corniea was visiting the park with family. Witnesses told investigators that Corniea jumped from the top of High Falls into the water below — a leap that can be both dangerous and deceptive due to the varying depths and strong currents at the base.

Preliminary findings indicate that Corniea struck his head on submerged rocks during the fall, rendering him unconscious before he could surface. Despite immediate efforts from bystanders and park staff to locate and rescue him, the powerful currents and rocky conditions made recovery efforts difficult. Emergency responders ultimately pulled him from the water, but lifesaving measures were unsuccessful.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the risks associated with cliff jumping and swimming near waterfalls, noting that even experienced swimmers can quickly become overwhelmed by hidden hazards such as undertows, slippery rock surfaces, and shallow landing zones.

“High Falls is one of the park’s most beautiful attractions, but it can also be incredibly dangerous,” an official statement read. “We urge all visitors to stay on designated trails, observe warning signs, and enjoy the falls from safe viewing areas.”

Tettegouche State Park, located along Minnesota’s scenic North Shore, draws thousands of visitors each year to view High Falls — the tallest waterfall entirely within the state — as it cascades over the Baptism River. While park rangers regularly caution against risky behavior near the falls, accidents have occurred in the past, underscoring the hazards of venturing too close.

Friends and family are remembering Corniea as a loving and adventurous man who cherished time outdoors and enjoyed making memories with those closest to him. The incident has left both the Edina and Silver Bay communities in shock, as well as serving as a somber reminder of nature’s power.

The investigation into the accident remains ongoing, but authorities have indicated that no foul play is suspected. Officials plan to continue reviewing witness statements and environmental factors from that day to better understand the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
