The incident occurred during the evening hours and has left family, friends, and the wider community grieving the unexpected loss.

DeWitt County Coroner Randy J. Rice confirmed that Bounds was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:04 p.m. after emergency crews responded to a report of a potential drowning at the popular central Illinois lake. The preliminary investigation indicates that the cause of death was drowning. Further autopsy and toxicology results are pending, but no signs of foul play have been reported at this time.

Initial reports indicate that emergency personnel were called shortly after 7:30 p.m. by bystanders who noticed the man had not resurfaced. Clinton Lake: A Popular But Dangerous Spot

Clinton Lake, a 4,900-acre reservoir managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), is a favorite spot for boating, fishing, and swimming. However, like many large bodies of water, it carries hidden dangers—especially for swimmers who may not be familiar with fluctuating depths, underwater currents, or sudden drop-offs.

Over the years, Clinton Lake has seen several drowning incidents, prompting repeated calls from local officials to increase public awareness about water safety.

Water Safety Reminder

In light of this tragedy, authorities are reminding residents and visitors to take proper precautions when enjoying area lakes and rivers:

  • Always wear a life jacket when swimming, boating, or engaging in water-related activities.

  • Avoid alcohol while near or in the water.

  • Never swim alone, and supervise children closely.

  • Know your swimming limits and the water conditions before entering.

Ongoing Investigation

The DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office is working in coordination with the Coroner’s Office to complete a full investigation into the incident. While no foul play is suspected, they are encouraging any witnesses or individuals with additional information to come forward.

Anyone with knowledge of the incident is urged to contact the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office.

Our hearts go out to the family of Kyle N. Bounds during this time of profound sorrow. His passing is a sobering reminder of the importance of water safety, even for experienced swimmers.
