Maine State Police Investigating Fatal Rollover Crash on I-95 Off-Ramp in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Maine – The Maine State Police (MSP) are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred Thursday afternoon, September 4, 2025, on the southbound Exit 113 off-ramp of Interstate 95 in Augusta. Authorities confirmed that the driver, 54-year-old Shaun McFarlin of Augusta, died at the scene.

According to investigators, the crash occurred at approximately 1:04 p.m. McFarlin was operating a 2006 Ford pickup truck traveling southbound on the Exit 113 off-ramp when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway. The truck rolled over multiple times before coming to rest along the embankment.

Emergency responders, including Augusta Fire and Rescue, were dispatched immediately. Despite life-saving efforts, McFarlin was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The Maine State Police said it remains unclear why McFarlin lost control of the vehicle. Investigators are reviewing factors such as roadway conditions, speed, and the possibility of a medical event. Troopers confirmed that McFarlin was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The off-ramp was temporarily closed for several hours as crash reconstruction specialists documented the scene and crews worked to remove the heavily damaged vehicle. The closure caused traffic delays for southbound motorists attempting to access Augusta. By late afternoon, the ramp was reopened to normal traffic flow.

News of McFarlin’s death has left his family, friends, and the Augusta community in mourning. He was remembered by neighbors as a dedicated and kind individual who was always willing to lend a helping hand. “Shaun was one of the good ones,” said a longtime friend. “He loved this town and the people in it. Losing him is a huge loss for all of us.”

The crash highlights ongoing safety concerns along interstate off-ramps, where sudden curves and changes in speed can present risks to drivers. The Maine Department of Transportation has urged motorists to remain alert and reduce speed when exiting the highway, especially at ramps with sharp curves or limited visibility.

Funeral arrangements for Shaun McFarlin have not yet been announced. His family is being assisted by local authorities and community members as they cope with the sudden loss.

The Maine State Police continue to investigate the incident and have asked that anyone with information or who may have witnessed the crash contact their Augusta barracks.

This tragedy marks one of several fatal crashes in central Maine this year, underscoring the importance of vigilance on the state’s highways and exit ramps. As the investigation continues, the Augusta community is left mourning the loss of a lifelong resident.
