Madison, Tennessee Tragedy: Man Opens Fire on Girlfriend and Her Five Children in Minivan

MADISON, TN — In what police are calling a horrific and senseless act of violence, a 26-year-old man from Davenport, Iowa, has been arrested and charged following a mass shooting that targeted a woman and her five children inside a minivan late Saturday night in Madison, Tennessee.

The suspect, identified as Jovien Smith, now faces a series of severe charges, including one count of criminal homicide and five counts of attempted criminal homicide, in connection with the brutal attack that has left a family shattered and a community stunned.

Incident Overview

According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD), the incident occurred around 9:59 p.m. on June 14 along Westchester Drive, a residential street in the Madison area. Police say the 41-year-old female victim, originally from Illinois, had been in Nashville visiting family and was driving Smith and her five children in a Dodge minivan at the time of the attack.

The situation escalated rapidly during what authorities described as a domestic argument between Smith and the woman. At some point, Smith allegedly became enraged, grabbed the steering wheel in what police believe was an attempt to cause a crash, and then threw the woman’s phone out the window, seemingly in an effort to isolate her from help.

The woman managed to safely pull the vehicle over, but what happened next was described by police as nothing short of “heinous.” According to investigators, Smith drew a pistol and opened fire on the woman, shooting her multiple times. Despite her wounds, she was able to flee the vehicle and run for help, desperately knocking on neighbors’ doors.

Inside the vehicle, however, the violence continued. Still armed and now alone with the children, Smith turned the gun on them, police said. Four of the five children were shot, each struck multiple times. Authorities have not released the names or specific identities of the victims due to their ages and the nature of the case, but they confirmed their ages as 1, 4, 7, 13, and one whose age was not disclosed.

Victims’ Conditions

All five children were rushed to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment. Tragically, the 4-year-old daughter succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The 1-year-old and 7-year-old children remain in critical condition, fighting for their lives, while the 13-year-old is reportedly in stable condition.

The mother, meanwhile, was transported to Skyline Medical Center, where she is receiving treatment for serious gunshot wounds. Her condition has not been updated, but authorities describe her injuries as significant.

Apprehension and Charges

MNPD officers arrived on the scene quickly and, after a brief search, apprehended Smith, who was still armed. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Smith was booked into the Davidson County Downtown Detention Center at 4:11 a.m. Sunday morning. In addition to the homicide and attempted homicide charges, he faces three counts of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated burglary. His bond has been set at $2.6 million, reflecting the severity and brutality of the crimes.

He is expected to appear in court on June 18, where prosecutors are expected to begin laying out their case.

A Community in Mourning

The shocking attack has reverberated throughout the Nashville and Madison communities, sparking both grief and outrage. Neighbors have begun leaving candles, flowers, and stuffed animals near the site of the shooting, creating a makeshift memorial for the young girl who lost her life and for the children still fighting for survival.

“This is something no one should ever have to witness, let alone experience,” said one nearby resident. “That poor woman and those kids… it’s absolutely heartbreaking.”

City officials and local advocacy organizations are calling for more support services for victims of domestic violence and their families, pointing out the often hidden but deadly nature of abuse in relationships.

Investigation Continues

Police are continuing to piece together the timeline and motivation behind the attack. They are also working to determine whether Smith has a prior history of domestic violence or firearm offenses. Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any additional information that might help with the investigation.

As this case unfolds, the community remains united in mourning and in its support for the surviving victims. Counseling and trauma services are being coordinated for family members and first responders affected by the tragedy.

This horrific incident is a sobering reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the urgent need for awareness, protection, and accountability.
