LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man was fatally shot early Saturday morning in the city’s Newburg neighborhood. Authorities have identified the victim as 48-year-old Mitchale Groves.

According to the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), officers were called to the scene just after 2 a.m. following reports of gunfire in the 5000 block of Poplar Level Road. When they arrived, officers discovered Groves suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts by first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives with the LMPD Homicide Unit were immediately brought in to investigate. They spent several hours combing the area for evidence, canvassing nearby homes and businesses for surveillance footage, and interviewing potential witnesses. Police have not announced any arrests or named any suspects in connection with the shooting.

Neighbors reported being startled awake by the sound of gunshots. Some described the early-morning scene as chaotic, with police cars and crime-scene tape quickly surrounding the block. “It was frightening,” said one resident. “This is usually a quiet part of the neighborhood, and to wake up to gunfire like that—it shakes you.”

Groves’ death marks yet another violent incident in Louisville, a city that has struggled with rising gun violence in recent years. Community advocates expressed frustration that another life had been cut short and renewed calls for solutions to address crime in neighborhoods like Newburg.

“This family is grieving the loss of a loved one today, and the community is grieving with them,” said one local pastor who has worked with anti-violence initiatives in the area. “We need to come together and find ways to prevent these tragedies before they happen.”

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed Groves’ identity later Saturday morning and will conduct an autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the LMPD Crime Tip Line or submit an anonymous tip through Louisville Crime Stoppers. Detectives stressed that community cooperation is often the key to solving cases like this.

As of Saturday evening, no further details had been released, and the investigation remains active.
