Lafayette Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run on University Avenue
LAFAYETTE, La. — The Lafayette community is mourning the loss of Jasmine Lasalle, 34, who was killed Wednesday night after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while walking across University Avenue, authorities said.
The crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the 900 block of North University Avenue, according to the Lafayette Police Department. Officers responded after receiving reports of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.
The Incident
Preliminary investigations indicate that Lasalle was crossing the street when she was struck by a vehicle that immediately fled the scene. She was transported to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported seeing the victim injured in the roadway and expressed shock that the driver had left without offering assistance. Authorities emphasized that leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death is a serious felony offense.
Arrest of Suspect
Louisiana State Police assisted in tracking down the registered owner of the vehicle. Officers located the vehicle and identified the alleged driver as Travis Guillot, 53, of Arnaudville. Guillot was subsequently arrested and booked into the Lafayette Parish Jail, facing charges of felony hit and run and illegal obscuring of windshield or windows.
Police stated that the investigation into the crash is ongoing, and further charges may be considered as more details are uncovered.
Community Reaction
The tragic loss of Jasmine Lasalle has left friends, family, and neighbors devastated. Residents of the area expressed grief and concern over pedestrian safety on University Avenue, a busy thoroughfare in Lafayette that sees heavy traffic at night.
“Jasmine was loved by everyone who knew her,” said a family friend. “Her death is heartbreaking, and we hope justice will be served. We also hope this brings awareness to drivers to be careful and responsible.”
Safety Concerns
Authorities are reminding drivers of the importance of slowing down in residential and commercial areas, being mindful of pedestrians, and stopping immediately in the event of an accident. Investigators noted that the obscured vehicle windows may have contributed to the driver’s failure to see Lasalle in time.
The Lafayette Police Department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has additional information to contact them immediately. Tips can help law enforcement complete their investigation and ensure accountability.
