Lafayette Community Mourns Beloved Mother and Purdue Staff Member Kendra Hodges After Tragic House Fire in Romney
A wave of sorrow has swept through the Lafayette community following a heartbreaking tragedy that claimed the life of Kendra Hodges, a cherished mother, friend, and dedicated Purdue University staff member. Kendra passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2025, in a devastating house fire that engulfed her family home in Romney, Indiana. The fire, which remains under active investigation, completely destroyed the residence and left her partner, Josh, and their children without shelter or belongings.
At just 42 years old, Kendra’s passing has left an enormous void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She was known throughout the community as a sweet, humble, and deeply devoted woman, whose life revolved around caring for her family and serving others with unwavering dedication.
A Life of Service and Love
Kendra held the role of Secretary and Associate Operations Administrator in Purdue University’s School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where she was admired not only for her exceptional work ethic but for her empathy, attentiveness, and genuine care for her colleagues. Her contributions to Purdue were more than professional—they were personal. She built lasting friendships with students, faculty, and staff, and was often described as the glue that quietly held things together.
Prior to joining Purdue, Kendra served in several other roles throughout the Lafayette area, including Office Manager at Van Dame Outdoor Maintenance, Administrative Receptionist at Unity Healthcare, and Unit Secretary at Lafayette Regional Rehabilitation Hospital. No matter where she worked, Kendra was the kind of person who made the workplace feel more human. Her smile, calm demeanor, and readiness to help left a lasting impression on everyone around her.
But above all else, Kendra was a mother first—the center of her children’s world. Her love for her family was visible in everything she did, from the small daily routines to the big life moments she celebrated with grace. Friends say she poured her energy into creating a loving, nurturing home, and her children were the heart of her world.
