Kentucky Man Killed, Two Hospitalized in Tragic I-64 Crash in Cabell County

A somber morning unfolded along Interstate 64 East in Cabell County after a devastating early-morning crash claimed the life of a young Kentucky man and left two others hospitalized. Authorities say the collision occurred just before 6:00 a.m. near the 31-mile marker in a construction zone close to Culloden, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by motorists and workers in active roadwork areas.
According to the Cabell County Sheriff’s Department, the incident began when a vehicle experienced a flat tire in the eastbound construction area. Due to the absence of a shoulder along that stretch of the highway, the driver had no option but to stop directly in a lane of travel. Sheriff Doug Adams reported that the driver, 20-year-old Stephen Green of Ashland, Kentucky, activated his hazard lights in an attempt to alert oncoming traffic to the emergency situation.
In a tragic turn of events, a construction worker in the area noticed the disabled vehicle and approached to offer assistance. After entering the passenger side of the vehicle, the car was struck from behind by an oncoming pickup truck. The force of the collision was severe and left all three individuals injured.
Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene. Stephen Green succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. He was just 20 years old. Sheriff Adams confirmed that both the construction worker who had been assisting Green and the driver of the pickup truck were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their names and current conditions have not yet been released.
Authorities have not indicated whether speed, distraction, or impaired driving played a role in the crash, though the investigation remains ongoing.
