Kayak Angler Ryon Mora, 38, Tragically Dies During BAM Tournament at Lake Almanor
The competitive fishing community is mourning the tragic loss of Ryon Mora, a 38-year-old kayak angler from Ripon, California, who passed away during the Bass Angler Magazine (BAM) Kayak Series tournament at Lake Almanor on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
A Promising Morning Turns Tragic
The tournament commenced under overcast skies with a gentle breeze of 3–4 mph. At approximately 6:37 a.m., BAM Tournament Director Michael Bray received an urgent call about an unmanned kayak on the lake. BAM staff, including CEO Mark Lassagne, promptly responded to the GPS coordinates provided and located Mora in the water around 6:42 a.m.
Despite wearing a personal flotation device (PFD), Mora was found unresponsive. He was swiftly brought aboard the BAM media boat, and CPR was initiated while en route to meet emergency responders. Paramedics met the boat at a nearby dock at approximately 6:47 a.m. and continued resuscitation efforts for over 45 minutes. Tragically, Mora could not be revived.
Community in Mourning
Mora was a respected competitor and beloved friend within the kayak fishing community. Known for his dedication to the sport and camaraderie with fellow anglers, his sudden passing has left a profound void. Fellow angler Shane Jones expressed his grief on social media, stating, “My heart is heavy, and my prayers go out to Ryon’s family, his friends, everyone involved in the rescue efforts, and all the anglers on the circuit whose lives he touched. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will remain with us on the water.”
In response to the tragedy, BAM immediately canceled the tournament and announced that updates regarding the BAM Kayak Series schedule would be shared in the coming days. The organization emphasized that Mora had adhered to all safety protocols and was participating in a sanctioned event, highlighting the unpredictable nature of outdoor activities.
Investigation Underway
The Plumas County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the cause of Mora’s death. Further updates will be provided pending the official release of information from the authorities.
