Investigation Underway After Gunfire Erupts at Busy Metairie Intersection

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation following reports of gunfire that rang out Wednesday afternoon at a highly trafficked intersection in Metairie, Louisiana. The incident occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. at the crossroads of Severn Avenue and Veterans Memorial Boulevard, near the bustling Lakeside Shopping Center, one of the most frequented commercial areas in the parish.

According to Sgt. Brandon Veal, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, law enforcement responded quickly to the scene after receiving multiple calls reporting shots fired. Witnesses described a chaotic scene with vehicles abruptly stopping and bystanders scrambling for cover as the sounds of gunfire echoed across the intersection. The area, typically teeming with afternoon shoppers and commuters, was quickly cordoned off by deputies to secure the scene and begin a preliminary investigation.

As of now, it remains unclear whether the shooting occurred directly at the intersection or in its immediate vicinity. Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of shooters involved or whether the incident was targeted or random. However, a person suffering from a gunshot wound did arrive at East Jefferson General Hospital following the incident, prompting speculation about a possible connection. Investigators are still working to determine if this individual was injured during the same event at Severn and Veterans, or in a separate but related altercation.

The sheriff’s office has not released any information about the victim’s identity or current condition. No arrests have been made at this time, and the motive behind the shooting remains unknown.

The incident has understandably raised concerns among residents and business owners in Metairie, particularly given the location’s proximity to a major retail center. Many are calling for increased law enforcement presence and surveillance in high-traffic areas as officials work to ensure public safety.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has relevant video footage—such as from vehicle dashcams or nearby surveillance cameras—to come forward. Community cooperation will be crucial in helping detectives piece together the sequence of events and identify those responsible.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office or submit tips anonymously through Crimestoppers GNO at (504) 822-1111.

As the investigation continues, the community remains on alert, hoping for clarity and justice in the wake of yet another disturbing act of violence in a public space. Updates will be provided as more details become available.
