Interim Cowlitz Tribal Public Safety Chief Found Dead Following Alleged Burglary Incident in Vancouver

Vancouver, WA – April 25, 2025 — The Cowlitz Indian Tribe and the wider law enforcement community are reeling after the tragic death of Charles Gardiner, Interim Chief of the Cowlitz Indian Tribal Public Safety Department, who was found dead in a vehicle following an alleged burglary incident in northeast Vancouver.

According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), the incident began around 9:43 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, when deputies responded to a call reporting an occupied residential burglary in the 9000 block of Northeast 79th Street. The caller stated that an unidentified male was inside the home, prompting an urgent response from law enforcement.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered that the male suspect had fled the scene on foot. A coordinated search by CCSO deputies and other local law enforcement officers ensued, canvassing the neighborhood and surrounding area. During the search, officers discovered a vehicle in the vicinity containing a deceased male matching the description of the suspect provided by the homeowner.

The deceased was later identified as Charles Gardiner, who had been serving as the interim chief of the Cowlitz Indian Tribal Public Safety Department. The Cowlitz Indian Tribe confirmed his death in a solemn statement issued Friday morning, also stating that Gardiner had taken his own life.

“This tragic news has shaken our community,” the statement read. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Chief Gardiner. At this time, our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues as they navigate this incredibly painful moment.”

Gardiner’s sudden and shocking death has stunned both the tribal community and law enforcement circles in southwest Washington. He had been serving as the interim chief during a transitional period for the Cowlitz Tribal Public Safety Department, and was regarded by many as a dedicated public servant.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding both the reported burglary and Gardiner’s subsequent death. Officials have stated that more details will be released once the investigation progresses, but they have not confirmed a motive or whether Gardiner had any known connection to the residence where the incident occurred.

As the community processes the unfolding news, questions remain about the moments leading up to the tragic end of Gardiner’s life. Law enforcement sources have emphasized that all aspects of the incident will be carefully examined, including Gardiner’s personal and professional history, recent behavior, and any possible factors that may have contributed to the incident.

Mental health advocates are urging the public to remember the importance of seeking help in times of personal crisis, especially for those in high-stress roles such as public safety and law enforcement. The tragedy has sparked renewed calls for increased mental health support for officers and public safety personnel, who often face immense pressure and emotional challenges in their daily duties.

The Cowlitz Indian Tribe is providing grief counseling and support services to employees and members affected by the loss. A memorial service for Charles Gardiner is expected to be announced in the coming days.
